Corps Begins To Lower Beaver Lake

images/stories/beaver_dam_ar_floodgates.jpg

The Army Corps of Engineers will begin making releases today at
Beaver Lake through the hydropower turbines to bring the lake level down to
elevation 1,121.4, the top of the conservation pool. The lake is currently
at elevation 1,123.4. The high lake levels were caused by repeated rains
during the spring.

Owners of docks on Beaver Lake are being advised to move their docks as
needed to prevent them from grounding as the lake recedes. Officials also
caution anglers downstream from the dam to be extra vigilant because currents
will be strong and swift when the larger releases are being made. Officials
also advise downstream boat dock owners to ensure their docks are properly
secured to withstand high flows.

The lake level will drop between one-forth to one-half foot each day.
Hydropower generation releases will average about 18 hours per day and
continue until the lake falls to elevation 1,121.4 feet. Without additional
rainfall, releases will continue until May 14.

Persons interested in Beaver Lake levels can monitor the Little Rock
District's water management Web page or local news outlets that report daily
lake levels. Daily lake information can be obtained on the Internet at
www.swl.usace.army.mil and click the "Water Management" button.

Three Peat For Berryville Choir

Three Peat, Three Peat, Three Peat was the theme Saturday night in New Orleans as the Berryville High School Choir under the direction of Mrs. Judy Bohannon won the Gold award for the THIRD consecutive year in National Choir Competition.  The Bobcats won Gold in New York in 2008, Gold in Chicago in 2009 and now Gold in New Orleans in 2010.  Wow!!!  What a tradition for this small 4-A school nestled in the beautiful Ozarks.

The Berryville High School Choir known as "Desafinado" knocked it out of the park during National Competition,  in New Orleans Saturday night.

The award winning choir, led by director  Judy Bohannon, claimed the GOLD, plus a 1st place award for the "highest scores" in their division.  The national competition had participating schools from California, Texas.Wisconsin, North Dakota, Louisiana, Arkansas and Florida.

The Berryville group also was presented with the "Spirit of New Orleans" award.  This award is given to the group of students that displays excellent citizenship, conduct, sportsmanship, teamwork and best represents their school, their community and their state.   The Berryville group also won this award in New York in 2008.

The judges were from the University of Houston, LSU, Loyola, Harvard and UCLA.  The judge who gave a mini-clinic following Berryville's performance said, "The choir's biggest problem is that they were perfect!"  She also added, "This group can really sing.  You obviously have a excellent director in Mrs. Bohannon."

Local people has an opportunity to hear this outstanding choir perform at their Spring Concert next Thursday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the Berryville First Assembly of God Church on South Hwy. 62 in Berryville.
