Petition To Dissolve Town Gets Signatures

images/stories/beaverbridge.jpgSome residents of Beaver, Arkansas  want to dissolve the town charter.

Beaver resident Susan Simler says a petition with the signatures of 24 of the town's 45 property owners has been submitted to the Carroll County prosecutor.

Simler, a kennel owner, says Beaver hasn't been a functioning town for years. Two people were appointed to the City Council Nov. 9, bringing the number to five but two seats remain open.

Beaver's population was 117 in 2008, up from 95 in 2000.

Mayor Mary Hill told Associated Press she hasn't heard of a town being dissolved because some unhappy residents circulated a petition.

Hill says most residents used to be retirees who had time to serve the city in various positions, but the population is now made up of younger, working people.

Sen. Laverty Looking At Legalization or Decriminalization

images/stories/laverty.jpgState Senator Randy Laverty says that legalizing or lessening criminal penalties for marijuana may be one way to curb overcrowding in Arkansas’ prisons.

Laverty, from Jasper, says he wanted to wait for legislative research and data from the Department of Correction before he decides whether to sponsor legislation to lessen or eliminate criminal penalties for the drug.

Laverty said at a legislative hearing last week that there should be debate about legalization after asking prison officials how many inmates are in jail on marijuana offenses. Laverty suggested that those using the drug for medical purposes shouldn’t be punished.

Laverty said he wouldn’t consider sponsoring any proposals on the issue until the 2011 session.

The state police brought in a confidential informant about a year ago and Chief John Bailey of the Green Forest Police Department assisted them in starting the Investigation. I Investigator JJ Reddick came on board with the Carroll County Sheriffs Office in January of this year. I have worked directly with Chief Bailey in an effort slow the drug problems of Carroll County. We utilized the Carroll County drug funds to make the drug investigation a success. Chief Bailey and I have spent many hours putting this investigation together. There are still outstanding warrants that we hope to make arrests on in the near future. The arrests stem from delivery of controlled substances of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription medication (morphine, hydro-codone). The majority of these Deliveries also fell with in 1000 feet of certain facilities namely churches or schools which enhance the penalties for the subjects arrested.

During this 11 month Investigation There has also been 4 meth labs seized by the Carroll County Sheriffs Office with 5 arrests and 5 narcotics involved vehicles seizures.
