Beaver Lake Drawdown Underway

The drawdown of Beaver Lake, which was delayed a week because of rain, began Saturday, August 1st.

Releases will continue 24 hours a day for seven or eight days, and then be reduced to 12 hours a day for another four or five days until conservation pool elevation 1,121.4 feet is reached. That's about five feet.

Also, boat dock owners on
Beaver Lake will need to be extra vigilant until it is completed to ensure they move their docks out as needed to prevent them from grounding as the lake recedes. The lake level will drop about one half foot each day when the drawdown begins.

A highway designers rendering of what the proposed changes to Hwy. 62 West at the Walmart Supercenter entrance would include.  First, at the bottom of picture, the white lines indicate the current 62 Spur.  The Highway department proposes re-aligning 62 Spur (yellow lines at bottom of page) to come across from the main entrance to the Supercenter, and install a four-way stoplight.  AHTD officials held a public involvement meeting July 30th at Towering Oaks to take comments from the public affected by the proposed highway widening.  The project will begin at Freeman Street and go west 2.8 miles to Hwy. 143.  Numerous residents and business owners that own property along the highway, showed up to meet with officials and try to get some concerns addressed.  Most people were concerned about property rights and how much property they were going to have to give up to AHTD for the widening project. Citizen Comment forms were handed out to all that attended.

Beaver Lake Safe Now From E-Coli

This summer, Beaver Lake is a hot spot for swimmers trying to cool off.   But taking a dip into some public beaches could be unsafe, if there’s high bacteria in the water.

According to an 80-page record, an area news agency obtained from the Health Department, each public beach at Beaver Lake is considered safe at this time.   But earlier this year, one area failed to pass the E. coli test -- Hickory Creek.   Back in April, the Hickory Creek swim beach was found to have almost four times the acceptable level of E. coli.  The Health Department closed the beach for about a week, until the returned to normal. They blamed the high levels on a large number of geese in the area.

The Health Department and the Army Corps of Engineers routinely test 70 different spots around Beaver Lake for the baceria.  The test results from April was the only time this year the lake was found to be contaminated, said the Health Department.   E. coli is most commonly linked to stomach ailments.   Health officials said to prevent yourself from getting sick, try not to swallow the water.

Retail giant Wal-Mart is in talks with U.S. health officials about putting swine flu vaccination sites at some of its stores.

A Wal-Mart official said the retailer might provide sites for swine flu vaccination efforts or help with logistics and the supply chain.

He said about 140 million people visit Wal-Mart stores each week.

Health officials have said about half the nation's population should be vaccinated to guard against swine flu.

About 160 million doses of the flu vaccine will be available in mid-October.
